Fred's Pages - Page 1

Fred Hume's pages are a collection of photographic essays that reflect his ongoing interest in the West End. His family history is intertwined with that of the Lower Mainland. As a long-term resident the perspective and treatment of the subject he brings to this site is very much appreciated.

#1 -English Bay Bath House, since 1931 an integral part of the beach at English Bay.
#2 - Nelson House Bed & Breakfast on Broughton Street. Built 1910
#3 - The balcony gardens of the Charlotte, a source of pride to its residents since 1928.

#4 - A view of what is now the Balthazar restaurant on Bidwell. Constructed in 1905, this building had a series of tunnels connecting it to the beach at English Bay and to the Gabriola mansion up the street, servicing the rum running trade during the 1920s. During the 1930s and '40s it was home to a bordello known as Maxine's College of Beauty Culture. In later decades it was the Maxine Apartments.

#5 - The Banff Apartments at Bute and Georgia built in 1909, an intriguing reminder of an earlier West End.
#6 - A rare Edwardian survivor, the stain glass window at the side of 1050 Nicola. The shadows are of the monkey tree planted when the house was built in 1909.
#7 - West End Guest House, a bed & breakfast on Haro, dates back to 1906.

#8 - The recessed balconies of the Charlotte built in 1928 by Dominion Construction at the corner of Nicola and Pendrell. A touch of Spanish, along with Italianate can be found as part of select buildings in the West End.
#9 - Barclay Manor constructed in 1890 was once a private hospital. Since 1990 it has served as a Seniors' Community Centre.
#10 - A landmark residence in the West End, the exquisite Charlotte, a view of its entrance.

Three views of Gabriola Mansion, a landmark on Davie Street since 1901. Originally built as a residence for the Rogers family, its sandstone exterior was quarried at B.C.'s Gabriola island. In 1977 it was converted to a restaurant, restoring "Gabriola's" interior closer to its original form. It's now home to Romano's Macaroni Grill. Meticulously maintained, the exterior has not changed since it was designed in 1898/99 by architect Samuel McLure.

Four views of another West End Landmark, the Sylvia Hotel overlooking English Bay at Beach and Gilford. Opened in 1912 the Sylvia was originally an apartment building known as Sylvia Court, named after owner A.D. Goldstein's daughter Sylvia. Virginia creeper, planted by one of the original residents of Sylvia Court, graces the facade of the west sideof the building, turning a bright crimson in the fall.

#24 - Magnificent Roedde House, built in 1893 and likely designed by Francis Rathenbury (Empress Hotel, Parliament Buildings, Vancouver Court House). The striking turret, a Rathenbury specialty, was designed so Mrs. Roedde could view the sea.
#25 - Late summer afternoon on the north side of Barclay Manor, part of Barclay Heritage Square.
#26 - View of the east side of Barclay Manor. Note the delicate details of one of the few remaining Edwardian homes in Vancouver.

#27 - As if it should be on the beaches of Italy, it is the Italianate look of the Kensington Apartments on Beach Avenue.
#28 - The balconies of the Kensington, a West End landmark since 1912.
#29 - Mediterranean villa? It's actually the 90 year old Kensington looking out over Beach Avenue.
